BROKEN WINDOWS

My husband asked me today why I call this blog Broken Windows. It's the title of a poem I wrote last spring:

1.
windows shatter
on the outskirts of Baghdad

to protect from the dust
transparent sheets are hung

tape is stretched across
contours of broken glass

2.
two children and their mother
slip away in a room made

windowless by plastic
she whispers in

the older one's ear
stars are memories in light

3.
on a monotone
street in Chicago

a taxi driver tapes
his wife in the cab

sets fire to her, sees
her fists hit the window

4.
through the window
the bullet came

ricocheted
off a pale blue wall

and hit her mother
while she watched her

5.
glass is an illusion
solid only this moment

over time
it will fall into itself

follow the flow
of gravity
