Mosca's run for office is featured in the Times-Picayune today. Here's an excerpt: 4:57:35 PM | Vinny Mosca's dad's roasted-potato recipe won lots of fans when he served the juicy dish at Elmwood Plantation Restaurant and at the West Bank bistro that still bears the family name. So Mosca decided to see how the dish, named after the late Chef Nick Mosca, would work on the campaign trail. In Sunday's neighborhood editions of The Times-Picayune, Mosca bought an ad that features a picture of himself, a list of his political endorsements in the race for the Jefferson Parish Council's 2nd District seat, and a copy of the recipe. Its blend of imported olive oil, garlic pods, rosemary, black pepper, salt and crushed oregano over potatoes has gained attention for Mosca's folksy campaign, which also includes the candidate giving out his home phone number and promising to return every call. (snip) Mosca faces former Jefferson schools superintendent Elton Lagasse in the Nov. 15 runoff. And he said he's sure the recipe has won him at least a few supporters. "One guy called me today and said, 'Me and my family are all voting for you,' " Mosca said. "I said, 'You saw the commercial?' He said, 'No, man, we tried the potatoes.' " You'd think Lagasse would be able to call up Emeril and get an award-winning recipe to fight back with. Nevermind, I forgot. Emeril's from Boston, not NOLA. His accent makes you forget. He sounds like he's from Brooklyn, which makes him sound like a NOLA Yat. A friend of ours, a Yat himself, recently told us the legend behind the famous New Orleans-Brooklynese accent: a couple of hundred years ago (maybe less, maybe more, it is a legend after all), a group of Ursuline nuns (or perhaps Carmelites) were sent by the New York diocese to New Orleans to lead the city's wayward flock toward cleaner living. As they taught in all the schools, the students started talking like them and soon so did the parents. Hundreds of years later here it is, alive and well in New Orleans long after the nuns packed up and left. The other, more conventional story is that the accent is nothing more than the result of the same mix of immigrants coming together around the same time. If you decide to believe that, I suggest 5 Hail Marys before going to bed just in case. Don't mess with the nuns! They'll come back from the dead just to wack you on the wrist.
