I know. I've been absent for a LONG time. It's all been good, though: got hired full-time at a local university for next fall, was invited to join a local poetry workshop with women writers who I deeply admire, have managed to make my way to the gym several days a week AND keep up with my own writing and the grading grading grading that my job entails. To make matters even better, the weather has been absolutely gorgeous down here for the past month. All of this has made it hard to sit down and get back to blogging. I believe I can now say the dry spell is over. I intend to get back to the nearly-daily short posts of last year. 11:35:24 AM | Why not begin right now? There's so much to write about. Earlier this week we had a scare -- S knows 20 guys from his former Army unit who are working for Blackwater in Iraq, many of whom are still in the military part-time but need the money. We didn't hear from one of them for two days after the horrendous, gruesome killings of mid-week. Luckily, he is okay. The entire event left us with nightmares, though, as I'm sure it did many others. Our roommate R, who worked for years in some of the hottest war-torn areas of Africa (she works for MSF, Medecins Sans Frontieres), said the pictures were too reminiscent of scenes she's seen over the years. She lost sleep, too. It was disturbing on many fronts and though it should have been a watershed moment, it seems instead it will be forgotten as the other 600+ American soldier/civilian deaths have been. And we wonder why we're such a cynical nation. The only thing that gives me hope is the new Air America Radio, which we've been listening to on the internet the past few days. It's wonderful to know you're not alone. Am I right? So far the O'Franken Factor is my favorite, though Randi Rhodes is OUTRAGEOUS and Chuck D is one of my favorite musicians (he's just not enough of a presence on Unfiltered, as far as I'm concerned). I hope the enterprise is successful; we need it now more than ever. I'll write a few New Orleans stories in the days to come. Meanwhile, happy spring! |
