Hillary in 2008? Why not?

I have been a "doubter" of Hillary Clinton for years now (she was just too much of a politician for me), and I've been very suspect of the right's talk of her running for president next time around. After all, they'd love nothing better than to have her run because they see her as easy to beat. But I'm starting to change my mind.

Tonight, C-SPAN's "On American Politics/Road to the White House" program broadcasted Clinton's July 10, 2005 speech at the Aspen Ideas Festival. I only caught the last fifteen minutes or so (I hope to watch the rest later on the web), but what I heard was truly impressive. She talked about the budget disaster of the Bush presidency, including the four tax cuts for the rich we've had so far and the looming underfunding of Social Security. Presenting the tax cuts and social security in the same thought, she summed up the problem of contemporary politics perfectly. The past few years, she argued, we've talked about "moral issues with political implications" but we've failed to talk about "political issues with moral implications." The social security short fall anticipated 75 years from now is a little over $3 trillion; the tax cuts will cost us over $11 trillion before then. What does that say about our priorities?

I don't know if she can overcome the wrath of the right to be on the 2008 ticket (VP wouldn't be so bad...). Frankly, though, I don't think she and the dems have anything to lose. Things are bad right now. They're so bad we need to act boldly if we hope to change things at all. Who knows?
