A few yummy stories...

Just a quick post before I heat up my dinner. I'm at my favorite side-of-the-highway hotel, the Days Inn in beautiful Horn Lake, Mississippi, just south of the Tennessee border and about fifteen miles from Memphis. The sun is setting outside my window, a splash of pink and electric blue. I drove through a strand of thunderstorms today -- the lightning of the next dangled down in front of me, just as the lightning from the last dangled down in my rear view mirror. I dodged debris from a pick-up filled with plastic bins that weren't properly tied up; felt lucky when I passed a construction sign that had crashed into the right lane (struck by lightning, perhaps); felt lucky again when I passed a pick-up overturned in the ditch after the sky broke up wildly. A cop was there already, his lights blinking, his car stopped crooked, and I thought that perhaps the worst had happened because there was no ambulance, no fire truck. At least not yet.

I've been in the habit of bringing food with me so I'm not tempted to stop for fried catfish, or worse, something salty yet tasteless at the cookie-cutter fast food joints that litter our highways. I'm hungry. In the spirit of my yummy leftovers, chicken swarma from Lebanon's and vegetarian spring rolls from Frosty's, here are a few links for your dining pleasure:

My new friend Chris Jones, a cultural anthropologist, on zydeco, the war, and the insult of force-fed patriotism;

Frank Rich on Cindy Sheehan, the peace movement, and the crackpot "swift boating" by the Radical Right;

And, naturally, Cindy Sheehan on Cindy Sheehan. She continues to grow stronger, keeping miles ahead of the madness.

My dear S has found my blog too sad these days so he's not going to read it anymore. He wants me to keep writing, though, and we hope he'll be able to read it someday when we're together again and all of this mess is merely dangling in our rear view mirror and not shattering all around us.
