A song for ever
You’ve probably never heard of dEUS. Well, you have now. They’re brilliant. But that’s not what this is about. This is about one of their songs. Their last album (The Ideal Crash) was released in 1999. Then they decided they needed some time off, to make films and such. In all those years they have released only one new song. It’s on their singles collection No more loud music and it’s called Nothing really ends. A perfect title for a perfect song. Everything is right about it, from the string arrangements to the background singing. This was made by someone with an eye for detail. It’s inspired craftsmanship. Some songwriters say they are looking for the perfect song. They should look no further. I have had albums that lasted throughout the years, but I’ve never experienced this with only one song. It’s still good. I have listened to it thousands of times and I still like it. Now they are in the studio to record a new album. I wouldn’t bother.
(Just kidding guys! I just thought it would be a good ending!)

TV is for laggards
Viewing figures have been falling lately. People are wondering why. Is it the bad quality of programming? Well, people do complain about that – but hasn’t it always been quite bad? Hasn’t quality TV always been rare? I think it’s something else. Looking at myself, I too have been watching little TV lately. In recent years I used to watch TV from behind my computer. But now I sit with my back to the TV when in front of the computer. Now I have to make a choice. And I have chosen the computer. Mainly for all the useful things you do with it. But also because I’ve started to prefer reading blogs to watching TV. And then there’s games. It’s much more fun shooting AK47s and throwing bananas at people than watching some people sit around and eat out of their noses. I think this is happening elsewhere as well. TV is not dumbing down by itself. It’s simply catering to the audience that’s still watching. The only people watching TV nowadays are the people that haven’t figured out the computer thing yet. TV is for laggards. The clever people are where the action is. Online games. Blogs. I’m not saying TV is dead. Painting has had great revolutions after photography was invented. Maybe the same will happen with TV. But for now this is the place. Stay tuned.
