Everybody else is doing it, so why can’t I?
This Saturday we will be playing the first of our playoff matches against Scotland for a ticket to Portugal. And as usual everyone is telling the coach what to do. Time to add my voice to the choir.
goal : Van der Sar
defense: Reiziger, De Boer, Stam, Van Bronckhorst
midfield: Van der Meyde, Cocu, Van der Vaart, Overmars
attack: Kluivert, Makaay
I’ve been quite conservative in defense. That’s the place to be conservative. Since I’ve chosen a 4-4-2 system, I thought I could put in some quite offensive midfielders. Cocu’s job is to clean up around Van der Vaart, so he will be able to move up to the goal. Making room for De Boer to move up or one of the wingers to come inside and let one of the wingbacks come through. I’ve chosen for Makaay up front because he’s in great form and has proven he can score in the national team as well. Next to him is Kluivert because with his experience, tactical insight and technique he will know what to do with the (lack of) space this system will give him. On the bench, Van Nistelrooij is out due to lack of form, Van Hooijdonk for tactical reasons. Seedorf may have the best record of all, he wouldn’t fit in this team. Van der Meyde, for example, could easily switch with Overmars. Something I don’t see Seedorf doing. He could substitute for Van der Vaart, if necessary. Though Sneijder could do that as well. All in all the most flexible system with the most dynamic players. I think.
