A place of my own
A number of posts ago I told you about this game I’ve been playing, No One Lives Forever. And I’ve told you I’ve become a member of a clan. Now I’m getting in even deeper. I’ve started mapping. I’ll explain it for the uninitiated. This sort of games always takes place in certain locations. They have a fixed size and once you’re done you move on to the next. These locations are called maps. The makers of the game have made the tools they use available to the public so they can make their own maps. The software is quite inaccessible – it takes a lot of effort to learn how to use it. It makes you really admire the people who already have their maps available, and with some ingenious tricks in it too – people like Phantizen and Wiky. (Hey, this is the gaming world – nobody uses their real name.) I don’t think it’s the reason most people do it, but mapping also gets you status. When everyone uses your maps they see your name come by every time it gets loaded. But that’s not why I’m doing it. I just wanted to work in 3d again. And I wanted to build something to call mine. To make something concrete – to be able to say ‘I made this!’ After all, I’m famous enough already.
