The next Nirvana is the next Duran Duran
If you look at the music industry right now, there is once again a big gap between what happens in the charts and what happens in the underground. In the nineties that gap was closed by grunge. I think this will happen again. It’s sort of like an economic cycle. But I don’t think it’ll be like grunge in any way. When you look at the current crop of bands you see a certain pop sensitivity. Not like the r&b or hiphop influenced pop stars of today, but in the eighties pop bands kind of way. This usually isn’t the only eighties reference – but it’s an important one. Because I think it’s what can cause a crossover to the pop charts. I don’t think it will happen in one big bang like grunge either. We don’t have the big influential underground bands like before grunge and Nirvana was definitely a one-off. Right now it seems every new band popping up makes a little step forward. Some fade away, some stick around. And some will grow bigger and bigger. It’s hard to predict in this early stage, but that’s what makes it fun. For now, my money is on Franz Ferdinand.
