Normen en waarden
Ons aller premier Balkenende is op vakantie in China. Nou ja, zoiets. En hij heeft het daar vooral over handel. Wat op zich niet zo erg is, maar er klopt iets niet aan. Balkenende is een man die zich laat voorstaan op zijn normen en waarden. Dat is de term waar hij zijn imago omheen bouwt. Dit valt natuurlijk goed bij zijn Christen-Democratische achterban. En daar blijft het blijkbaar dan ook bij. Zo'n bezoekje aan China zou een goede gelegenheid zijn om eens uiting te geven aan deze principes. Maar wat doet Jan-Peter? Hij zegt dat "de mensenrechten in China zijn verbeterd". Terwijl op hetzelfde moment Amnesty International bekendmaakt dat China meer mensen executeert dan welk land dan ook. Om over democratie en dergelijke maar te zwijgen. Kortom; zodra het over geld gaat gaan de principes overboord. Niet verrassend natuurlijk, wel teleurstellend. Zeker voor iemand die al niet bekend staat als een sterke persoonlijkheid. Kom op, Jan-Peter! Groei een paar ballen!
Moral values
Our prime minister Balkenende is on holiday in China. Well, something like that. And he's mainly talking about trade there. Which is fine in itself. But there's something not right about it. You see, Balkenende likes to be known for his 'moral values'. That's the phrase he's built his image around. This is obviously meant to appeal to appeal to his Christian-Democrat voters. And that's all there is to it, apparently. Such a visit to China would have been an excellent opportunity to put his money where his mouth is. But what does our Jan-Peter do? He says; 'human rights in China have improved'. While, on the same day, Amnesty International announces that China is executing more people than any country in the world. Not to mention what they're doing to democracy. So as soon as it's about money, the principles go overboard. Not surprising, of course, but disappointing nonetheless. Certainly for someone who's not know as a strong personality already. Come on, Jan-Peter! Grow some cojones!
