New hotness
Remember when I told you tv is dead? Well, it gets deader every day. Like calligraphy or painting it will still be there, but it won’t influence our lives that much. The music industry is in a bit of a slump too - if not commercially, then creatively. You see, there’s a new medium in town. You could say games are for kids and geeks – but I would call them ‘innovators’. It’s no coincidence that the gaming industry is bigger than the music or film industry. It’s because it simply adds more value. Hypes in the gaming world are not just hypes. There is enormous progress being made in concept (the idea of a ‘game’ is still changing), execution and technology. Which brings me to my latest obsession.
I’ve been playing No One Lives Forever online and I like it very much. So I decided the multiplayer aspect should be an important part of whatever game I bought next. I bought Unreal Tournament 2004. UT is different from most games in that it’s very much focused on the multiplayer option. You can play it in single player mode, but you’d be missing out on most of the fun. This game isn’t about a storyline, not even a non-linear storyline. It’s about action, action and then some more action. It’s 100% focused on pure gameplay. The game is set up so that you’re always close to the enemy. There’s no time to chat or anything. You can’t sit back and relax. You’re always busy, always in danger. It’s a 100% adrenaline rush. And that’s what I think is so addictive about it. Most games are simply fun. It’s a mental addiction. But UT is actually physically addictive. It should have a warning for people who are easily addicted. I always thought that when we’d have real virtual reality it would be so good that people would just give up on real life. Like in The Matrix, but voluntarily. Now I think we’ll get there much sooner.
