A copy of a copy of a copy

You may have noticed a lot of people are complaining about the low quality of music nowadays. One of the reasons for this is that for something to have artistic value, it should have some originality to it. Take for example the whole gothic metal genre as we see it today. The sound that’s now so popular has its roots in a place called Oss, in Brabant, The Netherlands. There, some deathmetalheads thought it might be an interesting idea if they added a female singer to the band. They’re called The Gathering. After a few more experimental albums, they perfected that sound on their third album Mandylion (1995). Critics tried to label it, but since they came up with several different labels (fairytale metal being the most appropriate) none of them really stuck. The Gathering then moved on to develop their unique sound, defying any kind of labelling. But with Mandylion they had found the magic formula. It spawned a slew of new bands, like After Forever, Within Temptation and others. Now it seems to have reached the US, with a band like Evanescence being very successful. But I can’t really get enthusiastic about it anymore. I’ve heard this sound for over ten years now and then it gets a bit old. Fortunately, there’s still The Gathering. Always changing, always developing.

(I remember Anneke with long blond curls! :P)
