Watch out, Europe: Co is coming!

Yesterday
AZ Alkmaar qualified for UEFA Cup football for the first time in 22 years. Most of the credit for that achievement went to the coach: Co Adriaanse. And this makes it interesting, because Adriaanse is part of a discussion that has been going on for quite some time now in football circles. The question is whether the best coaches are former star players or people who studied for it. The argument for star players is that they have worked with the best coaches around and have the experience of playing big matches which they can convey to the players. The argument against is that, to quote Adriaanse, a good racehorse does not necessarily make a good jockey. Since he said that about Marco Van Basten, one of the best players this country has ever produced, that caused quite a stir. But Adriaanse keeps providing the best arguments for himself: success. He may have failed at Ajax, but he reached the Champions League with Willem II (another small provincial club) and now he gets the maximum result out of AZ. Let's hope he can now do it again and improve on the traditionally rather poor UEFA Cup performances of the Dutch sub-top teams. But to get back to the discussion: I wonder if this happens in other sports. I have heard discussions about the systems of playing or training coaches use, but never about their background. Certainly not in this specific way. Is this true? Does it matter for those other sports? Does it matter here?
