Yay! A present!

Yesterday a friend of mine went to Amsterdam and bought a cd by a band called Seesaw. He thought it was the Amsterdam band called Seesaw, but it turned out to be a German band called Seesaw. So he gave it to me. Here’s my review.

Some music is bad because the musicians don’t know how to play their instruments, or the singer can’t carry a tune. Maybe they don’t know how to write a decent song, with nice melodies or a good groove. That’s bad. But there’s something worse than that. It’s when people are quite competent at what they do, but don’t put those qualities to use. You see this often in the music world. It happens a lot with genre music. People just want to be in a metal or punk band and that’s what they strive to be: just another metal or punk band. That’s all very nice, but don’t bother me with it. Seesaw is even worse than that. The genre they seem to have chosen is that kind of guitar rock we’ve been hearing for decades now. I won’t compare them to any other bands because that would be insulting those other bands. They’ve taken the worst clichés of that genre and turned it into something you wouldn’t call interesting if it grew tentacles and glowed in the dark. You could call it daring to be so unimaginative, but this is no artistic statement of any kind. Even Phil Collins would fall asleep listening to this. Their cover of ‘Come back and stay’ has given me a whole new appreciation of Paul Young. The Germans have given us Kraftwerk, Einstürzende Neubauten, Rammstein and lots of other great bands. Listen to them. Forget Seesaw. Don’t worry, it’s not hard. I’ve forgotten them already.

I think I’ll pass it on too. Who knows, maybe someday it’ll actually make someone happy.
