Best moments in music Retrocrush (via Fark) has a list of the best song parts in music history. I thought I could come up with some more (and more recent) examples. Here’s the result:
The little cough at the start of ‘Carnival’ by The Cardigans (Life). It somehow doesn’t seem to fit with this sugary sweet music. But, then again, neither does a Black Sabbath cover. The end of ‘Road to Nowhere’ by Talking Heads where David Byrne does a multiple Howard Dean.
The man screaming ‘Hello!…Hellooooo!’ at the start of ‘M1A1’ by Gorillaz (Gorillaz), while the guitar behind it gets louder and louder… Probably a sample but I don’t know from where.
The radio message in ‘100 Miles and Running’ (Greatest hits) by N.W.A. You better run… The drum solo in ‘The Perfect Drug’ by Nine Inch Nails (Lost Highway soundtrack). There’s a lot of good drumming in Nine Inch Nails songs, but this one jumps out. The sound effect that sounds like, um, distorted seagulls? in Tomorrow Never Knows by The Beatles (Revolver)
The moment in ‘Mutter’ by Rammstein when Till Lindemann screams his final Mutteeeeeeeerrrr! As if the song isn’t oedipal enough already (well, sortof – I don’t know what it exactly means but it certainly reminds me of those ancient Greeks). The piano-as-a-bass-line in Bachelorette by Björk (Homogenic), not really a single moment but the first time you hear it you get that Beavis and Butthead idea of ‘Yeah! This rocks! Turn it up!’ The start of ‘Firestarter’ by The Prodigy (Fat of the Land), when that big beat shows up. Instant adrenaline.
Then end of ‘Living in a glass house’ by Radiohead (Amnesiac) when a New Orleans funeral procession walks through the song
So… what are your favourites?
