It’s All About You

Once Charlie had an old blue truck

The kind you don’t clean up.

He bought a rack and stereo

And holder for his cup.

He loved to visit Home Depot

And buy the biggest stuff.

Crown molding, drywall, wainscoting,

Came home all bungie’d up.

The trailer didn‘t get much use

When anything would fit

Inside the cab or on the rack

With lots of room to sit.

He washed and waxed and made it shine

And thought it looked so cool.

The kids said, “We don’t want a ride

We’d rather walk to school.”

The truck was leaking pretty bad

And made an awful smell.

He drove it for another year

Before deciding, “Sell!”

No one would buy it past its prime

Although it sort of ran.

Habitat for Humanity

Could take it off our hands.

We got a tax exemption for

The title and the key.

Then Charlie said, “I’ve always liked

To buy myself a Jeep.”

He got a paper, saw the ads

And found one clean and red.

It wasn’t used by kids in school

But hiding in a shed.

He bought it and he brought it home

Adorned it with Harley.

The kids said, “Pick me up in it,

I’ll want my friends to see.”

Everything was good I thought

Until he needed wood.

He planned Home Depot trips and filled

The trailer best he could.

Tonight he says, “I need a truck

To carry heavy loads.”

The kids say, ”Good, we’re sick of bumps

On badly maintained roads.”

I guess this means we’ll get a truck,

A Chevy or a Ford.

We’ll roam the aisles of Home Depot

And freely load our hoard.

But what about the awesome Jeep?

The one I like to drive.

I guess some things are better kept

In dreams than in real life.

(Thanks, Jack, for the inspiration.)
