Mmmm whisky

Last night I poured the last drops of a bottle of some very good Scotch whisky into an Edinburgh crystal tumbler and went downstairs to enjoy a New Year's eve moment with my son. I have been savoring this whisky for more than two years. It is (it was, sigh) an 18-year-old single malt Highland Park from Orkney that I brought back from my last visit to Scotland. Whisky this good you don't pull out just every day. I keep a few bottles of more "pedestrian" malts on the shelf for the ordinary moments of life when I just feel like a belt of something smoky to warm the cockles. Ah, but New Year's calls for a wee dram of something special, so last night I reached for the good stuff.

I found my son in front of the television set. He was watching the Simpsons. My immediate response was: D'oh! There is a certain irony in being instinctively conditioned to blurt out D'oh! in disappointment at finding Homer Simpson saying D'oh! on your television set. This was not the quality moment I was looking for to enjoy my whisky. I considered for a moment pouring it back in the bottle to save for another time. But then I got sucked in to the show. It was a pretty funny episode. Krusty the clown was running for public office ("Ya! I'm a Senator!" "Representative, sir." "Whatever."). There was a really wonderful scene where the ultra-conservative Fox News Network was covering the election returns. A tickler across the bottom the screen scrolled the messages: "Do Democrats cause cancer?...Study: 92% of Democrats are gay…JFK Posthumously joins Republican party…Only dorks watch CNN...” I was laughing my head off. I sat back and took a hit off my whisky. Somewhere along the line, Homer took a hit off of his Duff beer. In an odd and unexpected way all was suddenly okay with the world.

Postscript: The Highland Park website is a pretty nice place to visit. They even have wallpaper to download. Anybody who finds my blog from a “highland park wallpaper” search on Google is most welcome here.
