Wordplay  (#3)

Today’s word was suggested by wifey who was no doubt fishing for a compliment.

Callipygian, Adj. Having shapely buttocks.

The word callipygian came into usage about 1800 AD. Its etymology is based on Greek roots from the period 1200-300 BC. We are wondering why it took over 2,000 years for this important word to find its way into our language. We are also wondering why this word is an adjective and not a noun, as in “those sure are some nice callipygians.” As an adjective the word must modify something. But what? Commonly, people will find themselves stuck trying to finish the sentence: “may I tell you that you have the most enchanting callipygian, uhm, you know, butt,” which is the same as saying: you have some really shapely buttocks buttocks.

A cautionary note. Callipygian is a powerful word. Mastery of its usage requires the utmost care in sentence structure. Saying “Woohoo! Check it out, guys, callipygian city!” may very well get you a slap in the face. Whereas, a carefully crafted evening of romance that includes this gem – “your callipygian figure inside those tight fitting pants really drives me wild with desire” – will get you laid. Guaranteed. Well, maybe.

Next week in Wordplay: a completely different word.
