Today is 1976
The classic rock station in Washington D.C., WARW, is in the midst of an event it’s calling “fifteen years in fifteen days” that celebrates the influential rock and roll years from 1968 to 1983. Every day is a new year and the DJs play classic rock tunes from that time period throughout the day. People have been calling in with recollections of the music they were listening to and the concerts they remember best. It is amazing how when I think about it, the big event concerts in my life line up chronologically. I’m really dating myself here, but, yes, I was attending rock concerts back then. Hey, but some of them I still had to be driven to by my parents. Yesterday, for instance, when it was 1975, my parents drove me ninety miles to Philadelphia to see Queen in concert. That was my first concert. I was so young I had no idea Freddy Mercury was gay and only a vague idea of what that really meant anyway. It was a truly memorable evening. Today being 1976 I saw Deep Purple in concert. I remember somebody next to me at the show commenting that Deep Purple was in the Guinness Book of World Records as the loudest band. “What?” I said. I also saw George Harrison today with Billy Preston and Ravi Shankar. Funny, the things we remember about a concert. George Harrison was obviously superb. But I can’t get this image of Billy Preston out of my mind. He had a massive afro haircut that seemed to defy gravity. He was sitting at the electric piano playing that song “nothing from nothing leaves nothing” and his head was bobbing back and forth, but his hair was always going the other direction, always a step behind the beat, always looking for a way off the stage at the next opportune moment. Tomorrow is 1977. I can’t wait. Tomorrow is Pink Floyd, “the Animals” tour. Roger Waters. David Gilmour. Should be a great show. I mean it was a great show. Ah, nostalgia.
