This and that

— Please don’t do that.

—What?

—That.

—Do you mean that?

—No! Were you doing that? Don’t do that either.

—I wasn’t doing that. I wondered if you thought I was doing that. So I did that to see if that’s what you thought I did.

—I really wish you wouldn’t do that.

—Which that? That that I was doing or that that I was pretending to do?

—Well, both, but especially that that you were doing; you do that all the time. You know that annoys me.

—Are you talking about that sucking noise I make with my tongue between my teeth?

—That’s disgusting. I can’t believe that you would even bring that up.

—I thought that was what you meant by that.

—That’s not it at all. Look, we’ve talked about this before.

—This?

—Yes this.

—I thought this was something different.

—This is that.

—I remember this differently. Stand close to me and I’ll refresh your memory about this.

—Okay, this is not that.

—This could be that, if we let it.

—Let’s not talk about this.
—Why not? I like to talk about this.

—The time is not right for this.

—But you’re okay with this?

—I’m fine with this.

—You like this?

—I love this.

—That’s good.

—No, that is not good. That is the problem.

—We’re back to that?!

—We never left that; we just got sidetracked with this.

—I think we should get back to this.

—Is this all you can think about when that is still unresolved?

—You know, if we were to do this, I’ll bet that would seem a lot less important.

—So you’re saying we should do this to take my mind off of that?

—Exactly.

—Mmm. This is nice.

—This is great.

—Don’t stop.

—What?

—That.
