Caldera

I was sitting on the toilet.

The radio was on in the bedroom.

I heard something about Mt. St. Helens volcano.

A plume of steam and ash ejected from the crater.

It was difficult to hear from my obstructed setting.

I leaned forward to focus the acoustics in my favor.

Suddenly there was a creaking noise, then a snap.

One of the hinge pins must have given way.

The plastic seat slid way to one side, then went up on edge.

It all happened so fast, just the way they always say.

I very nearly went in – another victim of reckless curiosity.

But I shifted my weight to my feet;

Steadied myself against the tile of the bathtub;

Instinct leading the way against long, plummeting odds.

I was lucky this time.

Catastrophe narrowly averted.

Unlike the great seat collapse of 1980.
