Escape to paradise
can’t you just hear the waves crashing
on the thin arcuate beach with
water so bright you have to shade your eyes
from the blue of it
foamy seawater runs out and hisses in defeat
as it falls over your feet and drops down
into the porous white sand
a cool mangrove breeze
sneaks up on you from behind
before it is caught by the palm fronds
that rustle a warning to your ears
seabirds hover overhead squawking
with a distinguished island patois
that makes you giggle
the sound of someone you love
shifting ice in the cooler as she
reaches for a frosty beverage
to share with you
and that other noise in your head
the one so troubling and unshakable
just yesterday
the one you carried with you all this way
can you still hear it?
