Up, down and in between

Do you have two-switch light fixtures in your house?

Do you like the convenience of two switches operating the same light?

Are you troubled just a little bit by two switches?

Did you grow up with only one-switch light fixtures?

Does up mean on and down mean off to you?

Do you find it disconcerting to flip a switch up when turning a light off?

Does that lack of ease still surprise you after so many years of operating two-switch fixtures?

How about flipping a switch down to turn a light on – is that even worse for you?

Have you ever walked clear across a room to flip the switch that was facing the right way?

As you passed the other switch, the wrong-facing switch, did you avert your eyes?

Do you feel like you are the only person in the world who does this?

Have you ever lain awake in bed unable to reconcile the image in your head of two switches,

one up and one down, each representing the same light turned off, so that you just had to get up

and adjust both switches to the halfway mark with little toothpicks to keep them in place,

leaving them not up nor down but even – even enough to get some sleep?

                                          Nah, me neither.
