Evolution in the suburbs

Tonight I cranked up the heated seat on the passenger side of the car and warmed a bag of takeout food during the drive home. Honestly, I had no business doing that. It felt decadent. I wished I hadn't. A bag of burritos. Some chips and salsa. It was frigid outside. I thought about early man. Back home in the cave, early woman and early child waiting for him to bring home the day's kill. Which he does. The meat's cold, they complain. He grunts and promises to do better. I pulled into the driveway of my modern day cave, grabbed the food and ran toward the door. Along the way, I pointed a key over my shoulder and hit the automatic lock button. Beep. It all leads up to this.

Parking karma

SHE was zipping along too fast HE was toying with the radio THEY were looking for a parking spot SHE was driving on a row heading south HE was on a row heading east THEY were heading right for one another SHE didn’t see him HE didn’t see her THEY missed by inches SHE slipped on past HE had no choice but to let her go THEY both knew what that meant SHE saw the spot first HE saw her blinker from behind THEY each registered a reaction SHE knew he was miffed HE knew she was gloating THEY wouldn’t look at each other SHE thought to herself I am so lucky HE thought to himself just my luck THEY pretended to be cool SHE pulled into the spot HE drove on winding up first gear for effect THEY thought that was that SHE parked and gathered her things HE found a spot just a little farther along THEY got out of their cars together SHE looked at him HE looked at her THEY recognized one another from long ago SHE smiled awkwardly and said hello HE said nice to see you again THEY thought to themselves what an asshole
