Live 8
I plan to watch the Live 8 concerts on Saturday afternoon. They will be broadcast on MTV for eight solid hours starting at noon eastern time. Eight concerts with big name bands in eight cities around the world all on the same day. The goal, as I understand it, is to raise awareness internationally for the need to eliminate debt in poor African nations, or, at a minimum, to provide them with 1.9% financing until March 2006 on all balance transfers of $500 or more. I am looking forward to seeing a good many of the performances. U2 will play. Dave Matthews. Coldplay. REM. Elton John. Paul McCartney. Bjork. Pink Floyd is reuniting just for this day – with the agreement that they go back to grousing and casting aspersions about one another starting early Sunday morning. I wonder what Pink Floyd will play? Money? (“…share it fairly/but don’t take a slice of my pie…”) Should be interesting.
It occurs to me that I have not watched a minute of MTV since the last save-the-world endeavor by Bob Geldof, Live Aid, back in 1985. I probably should have tuned in a little more often. Maybe I would have heard the news concerning Geldof's sex change operation and his subsequent affair with Tony Blair...
