Word Power

"The usual, Hon?"

"Yeah."

"Anything else I can get you?"
"No, just the coffee." I hand her my prepaid Starbucks card.

"Do you need your receipt?"

"Nah. But tell me if I owe you money. I think the card's nearly used up. I probably need to recharge it."

She pulls the receipt from the register and looks it over. "You’re OK. You've got like three more coffees on this."
"Really? I guess I'm not as on top of the situation as I thought."

"Or maybe more so. Maybe you're being proactive."

The word hangs out there in the air. "Proactive. I like that. Proactive is a good ‘word power’ word."

She waves me off dismissively. "I got lots of words. I use them all the time."

"Yeah," I say, "I know what you mean."
