Songs for aging children

If you read my blogs you know that I am a frenetic radio listener, constantly pushing the preset buttons on my car radio in search of the right song. Today as I was driving along, the song Moondance by Van Morrison came on, and just as I was about to discard it, I stopped for a moment. It occurred to me that this was probably the 50th or 100th time in a row that I dispatched that song. I used to like Moondance. I probably still do, but how can I know for sure, since nowadays I can't get it off my radio fast enough? It occurred to me that maybe I was done with that song – done Moondancing, marvelous day or not – for good. It is possible that I will never again listen to Moondance all the way through for the rest of my life. Wow! Talk about a mortality check. I don't want to think that I'm done with anything in life. No matter how insignificant, you have to figure there’s one more time for everything.

Who needs these reminders that they are getting on in years? I sure don’t. It's bad enough to think that I may have bought my last house or that I will purchase - what? - three or four more cars before I die. Anyway, all of this heavy thinking - from the moment I heard and recognized the song on the radio to the thoughts of my own limited time left for surfing the airwaves - took about a second and I still changed the station. I still couldn’t bring myself to listen to Moondance. Hey, if it's not the right song, it's not the right song. There's not a damn thing I can do about that. The good news is that for every song that is notched off the life list, there is a new one to take its place.
