Odeur #53, Redux
Upon further development, Odeur #53, the hot plasticy one, gives me a sharp pain in the head, inner ear and throat when I smell it. I'm starting to develop an averse opinion of it based upon the association with pain. Which makes my mind wander...if a person, say, was into pain, specifically, if they were into dental types of pain, I wonder if the clove-y disinfectant odor often found in a dentist's office would be appealing to them, based upon the association with pain. I know that when I smell strong clove these days, I often get a sensation that my tongue is numb and that I can taste blood. Hmmm.
Also, I forgot to post a picture of the Molecule 01 by Escentric Molecules. Here you go, and it links to a store that sells it so that you can go look around at other strange, stunningly expensive and potentially beautiful things if you want. (luckyscent.com)

And here's the description from Luckyscent:
"Aroma chemicals are used in virtually all modern fragrances to bring to recreate scents like jasmine or violet or cedar or a host of other familiar olfactory favorites. Molecule 01 is the first of its kind to pay homage to just one of these hidden delights—the not so sexy sounding Iso E Super. You know it as a sweet sandalwood/cedar-like smell…a base note prevalent in many legendary perfumes, and it finally gets to shine all on its own. The velvety woody note is highly sensitive to body chemistry and twists and turns as it evolves, enticing the wearer with an almost pheromone-like fascination. The science of scent is finally on display and is sure to delight those woody fragrance aficionados who love to venture forth and discover something devastatingly unique. There’s nothing like it in the world."
And here is a depiction of the actual molecule shape for Iso E Super:

And the molecule profile, from a manufacturer:

No, most of that doesn't mean anything to me, but I thought it might to some of you.

Avant-Garde Fragrances
Today I'm sampling two *very* unusual fragrances by Commes de Garcons - Odeur #53 and Odeur #71.
Profiles:

Odeur #53 Notes:
oxygen, flash of metal, fire energy, washing drying in the wind, mineral carbon, sand dunes, nail polish, cellulose, pure air of the high mountains, ultimate fusion, burnt rubber, flaming rock

Odeur #71 Notes:
dust on a hot lightbulb, bamboo, metal, electricity, lettuce juice, Hot laundry right out of the dryer, clean, sexy Xerox machine, incense, wood, moss, willow, elm, bay leaves, bamboo, hyacinth
I didn't make that shit up.
So, I have #53 on my left arm and #71 on my right arm. They are...hmm. I can barely smell #53 at all, it just smells "hot". Like a vanilla-scented plastic doll softened in a microwave. Like sweet, clean laundry being pressed with a hot iron. It's too strange for me to know what I think. It's not offensive in the least, it's just...a whole different idea. It's also so faint that I imagine it as quite a subtle aura enhancer. It's not something that will leave a wafting scent impression floating through the room after you. Or will it? Perhaps it will. But nobody will realize that it's happening. They will just smell fresh, hot things. They will not realize what it is, I bet.
#71 smells like green leafy things and wet wood being roasted in a fire sprinkled with incense. It's actually a rather come-hither scent, reminds me of the smell of people having fun at a bonfire party, teenagers spritzed in lively, bright fresh things tromping through wet grass and soaking up campfire smoke. It's missing the smell of peach schnapps and beer, but otherwise, yeah. It makes me want to breathe deeply, and it makes me feel warm and happy. But it doesn't smell like a "perfume". It is a smell that someone might smell like, but without having dabbed it on intentionally. It's the smell of a day of accumulated experiences wafting from the clothing, skin and hair.
Also, on the back of a hand I had to try out Escentric Molecules' "Molecule 01". This is an homage to the molecule known as Iso E-Super. It's included in just about every modern fragrance imaginable, being a quiet, subtly woody-musky odor that brings things together, marries them and makes them last on the skin. It smells very much like a dry sandalwood with a little bit of musk. I'm a little bit anosmic to musk, and what I can smell tends to have a harsh "bite" to it for me, but I find this interesting. It's familiar, but quite naked. It smells like a skeleton of an idea, the exhalation of a soft richness that needs to be adorned. I might use the rest of this tiny vial to play around a little bit with essential oils, maybe.
