I am going to be leaving Monday for a ten-day trip. I will almost certainly write about it in more detail over the weekend, before I leave. In the meantime, I must figure out what to do with my car. I park on the street. I have the option of parking the car during my absence in the enclosed lot at a friend's building, free of charge. It might be worth it. To park on most any street in my neighborhood is to be burdened by twice-weekly street cleanings that take place on different schedules, depending on the block. The car has to be moved when the street is to be swept, or you will get a $48 ticket. It's happened to me before. The curb I am parked at now is maybe a hundred yards long and the only one in the surrounding neighborhood that I'm aware with unrestricted, indefinite parking. No street sweeps. If I choose to leave my car for ten days, I will in fact be "hogging" one of these sought-after unrestricted places. I'm concerned about breeding ill-will. I keep a boot on the steering wheel at all times, so the car won't be stolen. But it may be stripped. I thought about removing the battery, taking it indoors, and storing it in my large closet while I'm away. I spent some time today trying to loosen the battery from its rack and quickly decided it was too much trouble. I suppose it could disappear while I'm gone, but I don't think the thugs would bother.
