That this man would come under this kind of professional attack attests to how badly skewed the psychiatric profession is, in favor of the interests of drug-makers. He's not saying drugs are never appropriate in the treatment of psychiatric disorders; he prescribes them. He questions only some findings of safety and efficacy by drug-maker studies; he's arguing for caution in the use of medications. Dr. Healy's professional opponents make the case in the Times article that because he makes about $40,000 a year as an expert witness in court cases, attesting that bad drug reactions can cause antisocial behavior, his articles advising caution are not credible.
It's obvious to me what Dr. Healy should do. If he wants to continue to publish journal articles about the potential dangers of psychotropic medication, and I hope he does (few others will), he should stop making court appearances immediately. |
