My yearly Radio subscription with Salon is soon to expire. I'll need to renew it this month, and that prospect weighs on me constantly, stalking me like an ugly cloud.

Radio is difficult to use. It often doesn't work like it's supposed to, so I dread any interaction with it that's even slightly out-of-the-ordinary. Though it should have been a simple matter, renewal was an ordeal for me in 2004, requiring intervention by tech support.

This time, unfortunately, there are going to be choices I did not face last year. I run Radio on a Mac, currently on an OS 9.2 desktop. I have it that Radio will be discontinuing support for Mac OS 9.2 sometime in 2006. So eventually I will need to change my subscription to a Radio version compatible with OS X. I am seriously not looking forward to migrating my blog from the 9.2 to the X desktop, but it seems that even if I postpone that chore till later in 2006, I still must face it eventually.

This month, do I renew my blog in 9.2, keeping everything the same, in hopes of keeping my life just as easy as possible for now? Or do I undertake the dreaded 9.2-to-X migration, to get it out of the way?

On an unrelated note, I was very pleased to come across this website, to promote feminist writing in the blogosphere.

Now, the name of "feminism" has been pretty tarnished in recent decades. Did Gloria-Steinem-style orthodoxy work? Is it still necessary? people ask cluelessly.

Let me tell you a story about my earliest blogging days, back in December, '03.

I was examining some of the other Salon blogs, preparing to get my own online, and I came across one by a young Dutchman, writing in English.

In his blog, this young fellow praised the looks of a Dutch supermodel, to whose photo he'd linked. Then he wrote something very close to, "You'd think that all Dutch women were gorgeous. I want to assure you, this is not the case." He had embedded the latter comment with links to female bloggers who'd posted their photos online, who were ordinary-looking women.

I shouldn't take the Dutchman's words to heart. In person, he was surely a pasty, pimply nincompoop with dandruff and bad breath. He was resentful because he couldn't get dates. He was probably impotent, those times he did score.

I did take that ugly blog to heart. The internet is a media venue! As long as there is going to be garbage like this online for women and girls to stumble across, feminism could not be more pertinent.
