How ironic that two death sentences were handed down almost at the same time today in California. Scott Petersen and PeopleSoft.

Scanning the web for RSS feeds I found the worlds first 2 GB digital image. Watch it in Flash, but make sure you have bandwidth before you start and the controls only work in IE. Make sure to give it time to repaint the image. Zoom in to see what time it is on the church clock in the background. When they put this technology into a digital camera, I switch from regular film.

I spent the day with my two new favorite software tools.  FeedReader and FireFox. If you're still using IE or Netscape, it's time to switch to a new experience browsing.
Firefox: Easy migration, fast browsing, uses less memory, unclutters your desktop (through a tabbed browsing interface), stops pop-ups/unders, elliminates annoying dialogs to perform simple tasks (download, find etc.), Google build into the taskbar just to mention the most obvious.
FeedReader: Manage RSS feeds. Grouping, RSS export/import. Source code.  Note: DO not attempt to use along with Radio Userland as they use the same port to communicate on (5335).

NASDAQ today ended close to 2100.  Nice run-up from the election. But it's not going to last.  I'm converting to cash for now and awaiting any post election/post war disasters.

Bush quickly chose a new Attorney General. Gonzales wrote the memo assuring Bush that his decision to not apply the Geneva Prisoner of War to the Taliban and others was right.  Towards the end of the document he lays out the pro's and con's, the con's being dissatisfaction among alliance partners and the fact that US prisoners would miss out on the same rights if caught.

For those of you waking up in Europe: Big win for the republicans in the senate.

The president election turned out to be close, another Florida election, but with Ohio as the problems state.
Bush is close to win and he will probably call it soon. He can win in two ways.
1. He either needs to get Ohio (which currently has a lead for Bush by ~150K votes, but with about ~100K votes not counted and 175K provisional votes dangling).
2. He wins New Mexico, Iowa and Nevada and he has 270+ electoral votes.

They will probably go for item 2, so they don't have to wait for Ohio's 11 day counting/lawsuit period.
Meanwhile the Kerry camp has 'gone to bed' and have no plans to concede.

Computer science veteran Andrew Tanenbaum displays his strength on this site. Amazing how most americans living abroad quickly gain a different perspective of their own country. Could be something in the water in Europe.

Here is the highlight of todays column: "Zogby has polled Bush's job approval/disapproval rating in several states. This is often a key indicator of how an incumbent will do in his reelection campaign. An approval score substantially below 50% is indicates trouble ahead. Here are the approval/disapproval scores in some key states. Colorado 46%/54%, Florida 46%/53%, Iowa 45%/55%, Minnesota 43%/56%, New Mexico 47%/53%, Nevada 49%/51%, Ohio 43%/49%, Pennsylvania 445/55% and Wisconsin 45%/55%."

Andrew is part of an impressive masters program in Parallel and Distributed Computer Systems in Holland.

I recently moved to a part of San Francisco which is part industrial and part residential.  It seems that combination is attractive to homeless people.  Last week I stumbled over the following note in my driveway:
