It’s good to be returning to my personal blog. I can’t quite believe that I’ve been away for slightly more than a year and you’d be forgiven for wondering what could have been going on to keep me away for so long.
The main reason is work. Lots and lots of work. I have a hectic day job programming and my time outside work for the past year has been crammed with working on a lot of other projects. I like to keep this space work free so I’m not likely to go into those projects but I’ve also been involved in helping quite a few people get going with their own blogs and have been nurturing them along.
One of my favourite projects has been working with the team at Yardwear where until a few months back I was a regular poster and may yet return. I’ll be posting about Yardwear in the near future and some of the things I’ve learnt about helping blogs reach a wider audience and of course I’ll be applying what I learnt from that experience to my own blog. So you can expect to see a lot of changes here.
The other big distraction from blogging has been an increasing fascination with language acquisition. Whilst that includes programming languages, I really mean spoken languages. Over the past year I’ve been brushing up my skills in German, French and Esperanto which were early loves but have also been dipping into the early stages of learning Russian, Japanese, Spanish, Hindi and Indonesian. With a busy work schedule, that’s really left me with little time to even think about blogging.
What’s really drawn me back is a combination of missing the process and of the increasing disparity between my enthusiasm for blogs and the increasingly apparent neglect of my own blog. I’ve been involved in getting about 13 blogs set up over the past year but I’m going to be returning my focus back to my own projects for a while.
A lot of the last years spare time has also been taken up with acquiring new technical skills. I’ve been heavily focused on programming in actionscript for Flash, especially on XML and database integration but also on animation scripting. I’ll continue working on that for the next few months but I'll also be moving on to programming on the .NET platform. I wrote a few small but useful applications for windows server hosts a few years back but never really migrated into using .NET on the web.
Aside from that I have no excuse at all for not posting. Sorry. Normal service will now resume.
