"Appeasement" seems to be the uber-meme of many conservatives in discussing the Spanish election yesterday.
Au contraire, mes amis.
This idea flies only if you accept the conflation of the Iraqi campaign, and the war against al-Qaeda-styled jihaist terrorist. It's an idea that the conservatives seem to be successful in putting over on the American public, due mostly to the softness of a press that resolutely refuses to question the issue. I have yet to see Rumsfeld, Rice, Powell, or Cheney put the question hard: "Since we now know that Saddam was not involved with the jihadist, and had now WMD's to share with them, are we not now involved in two wars: one against the jihadists, and one in its post-combat phase in Iraq?"
The fact of the matter is that Spain, if it chooses to do so, can now focus its resources and abilities on its real enemies, the ones that it shares with America: the jihadists. This is the cold reality that Bush & c refuse to countenance honestly, and we suffer for it. They are clearly NOT appeasing the terrorists who killed 200 Spaniards and crippled many, many more; they are wisely withdrawing from a separate campaign.
It's a good step by Kerry to start pounding on Bush on homeland security and and the war on terror. We have spent far too much blood and treasure chasing a false enemy.
