At Home On New Year's EveThere may be some alcohol in the house. I'll have to check. There are a few DVDs from Blockbuster lying around the house, and since my daughter is giving us a night to be with her, I'm sure we'll cozy up to some popcorn, dim the lights, and get ready for a fantasy movie, or...ugh...some romantic comedy. I favor the stranger stuff, having just watched Red Dragon and Dreamcatcher during my two-week vacation. Not exactly seasonal movies, but they fit my usual grinchy mood just fine. Let's see...one bottle of Bass Ale...no Guinness to go with it...and several bottles of wine, including a Cabernet, a Zinfandel (red, of course), a Malbec and Merlot. Which goes best with popcorn? If I am still awake at midnight, I will get my hugs and kisses from the family, and head off to the rack. Of course, I could be blogging. comment [] |

Educational toys I've been discussing the value of educational toys this morning with my wife. We recognize the value of playtime as an educational experience, but this morning we have been musing about the toy we saw last night. Our niece was playing with a doctor's kit she had received as a Christmas gift. It has a stethoscope which actually produces a coughing sound. It's not a bad thing, I suppose, but as we looked at the dozens of expensive "educational" toys strewn about her house we began to wonder what other opportunities for education will exist in her home. Possible gift for next year: A novel written on Kleenex tissues...one sniffling page at a time.

E. V. Lucas. I have noticed that the people who are late are often so much jollier than the people who have to wait for them. [Quotes of the Day] comment [] |
