For those who may have missed it...

In October, 2003, a pair of Swedish hikers discovered 140 shoes filled with butter in a remote area in the province of Jaemtland. The find included all kinds of footwear from high heels to sandals and contained 154 lb. of butter and no signature. The trove quickly sparked discussion all over the world, several haiku, and at least one speculation as to the identity of the perpetrator. The top contender was a Chinese artist by the name of Yu Xiuzhen who did a similar placement in 1996 in the mountains of Tibet (see picture), but to date it has not been proven.

I've been finding more and more instances of butter in sculpture (this month's big news is the butter portrait of Milton Hershey at the PA State Farm Exposition). It's a bizzare little world, but my favorite stories come from the dairy princesses at the minnesota State Fair who, as prizes for their coronation get their heads handed to them in butter. Usually the winnings end up getting chipped and used for community pancake breakfasts and the liek, but one Princess had the cops called on her when a neighbor looked in her barn to see the whitened head sitting there looking like a leftover from a Mafia hit!
