I was reminded yesterday about Kenneth Branagh's use of Hamlet's statue in his movie by the same name. At the beginning, of course, the piece is grand and imposing and "alive", just as his father was in Hamlet's mind. At the end, it is shattered and the inscription is in ruins. It says everything. I got to wondering about the use of statues in movies in general.

There was the powerful use of the Statue of Liberty at the end of the "Planet of the Apes" and more recently the haunting use of the huge works in the "Lord of the Rings".  Lord of the Rings - Two Statues - Wall PosterThere is, of course, "The Maltese Falcon". Thousands of sphinxes and ancient gods litter the sets of the biblical extravaganzas of the 1950's. As far as background pieces, statues are everywhere. Biopix of sculptures like Camille Claudel, of course, are drowning in work.

Statue counting in movies can become an obsession.  I'd love to hear about other favorite uses of sculpture in film.
