It’s time to update some recent stories on this blog.

The first is the Fourth Plinth story about London’s Trafalger Square and its empty plinth. After an extended competition, the selection committee chose two statues for the plinth- Allison Lapper Pregnant and Hotel for the Birds are the final picks- one of an armless pregnant woman and the other a hotel for pigeons made of plastic. They’ll be shown one after the other this year.

According to London’s Evening Standard, “Londoners disliked all of the short-listed offers, and their dislike cannot simply be dismissed. It is difficult to criticise Quinn because we do not want to criticise his subject matter - a pregnant disabled woman is a fine subject for a sculpture - but I am not convinced that it is the right thing for the plinth.”Artist's proposal(Photo from fourthplinth.co.uk website)

On the crying statue front, the FBI has been called in to test the tears of the Madonna outside the Medford, MA church where she’s been weeping for weeks.

The lawsuit to have “Holier than Thou”, the bust of a bishop with a questionable mitre, was lost in Kansas. The federal court found that the offensive piece did not violate the Constitution.

Paul Kelleher, the man who decapitated Maggie Thatcher, served roughly half his 3 month sentence, but his case is being appealed on a technicality.

And the latest addition to the National Statuary Hall is former Speaker of the House Carl Albert, who was born in Bugtussel, OK. He will join Will Rogers and Sequoyah who now represent the state there. Although the official rules say that each state may donate only two statues, this is a private donation and jumps the regulations.
