We all react to the news differently.

When the news came from Afghanistan that the eighty animals left in Kabul’s Zoo were maimed and starving, some responded with money, some with services and one, at least, with sculpture.

Almost two years ago, Bob Coffee, a Texas sculptor, heard the news of Marjan, the 24 year old blind lion with its missing eye and mangled face from a grenade attack and responded with his hands. He began working on a bronze of the beast to be installed in the zoo after the lion died in 2002. He offered it as a symbol of the Afghan people and as a tribute to the tough animal the lion was. His offer was gratefully accepted by the zoo and will be placed prominently at the entrance.

But before the piece goes, it is being shown at various sites in the US, including the NC Zoo which raised funds for the rehabilitation of the zoo and care for the animals there.
