Tom Murphy's Neptune sculpture(Photo from icLiverpool website)

In 2008, Liverpool, England will be Europe’s “Capitol of Culture”. It’s been preparing for the role for about 3 years, and now things are rolling into high gear.
One of the most interesting players in the city's refurbishment is a sculptor by the name of Tom Murphy.
Tom’s the one who made the John Lennon at Liverpool Airport and he’s the one who, three years ago, submitted the plans for a giant Neptune (one of the city’s symbols) to be placed in the Mersey as the city’s symbol- sort of a Statue of Liberty of the North Country. The city renamed it Poseidon and declared it the best idea they’d seen in a decade. Now, though, they’re hedging. They’ve invited various international designers, sculptors and architects to come up with other ideas. Tom’s upset, to say the least.
Now, I’m really interested in this statue, because the pictures I’ve seen are really haunting. The piece will cost 3 million pounds and welcome visitors to the Merseyside.
The contest will bear watching.
