How to fix mom's computer is a nice article that most geeks can relate to with some dread. Starting with a totally unprotected PC with lots of adware and a full mess, Gina Trapani walks you through the necessary updates. Thus it's also a nice PC security primer.

Windows 98 directly on cable with no forewall? The horror! Updating to XP wasn't even mentioned as an option. Odd. Maybe the machine was very old.
[Secular Blasphemy]

March 20, 2004

Six Apart and Ublog SA sign an exclusive representation agreement in Europe

Mena, Ben & me

Mena, Ben, Barak and myself have been already working on this agreement for many weeks, I am very glad and honored to announce that Six Apart and my company Ublog SA have signed yesterday an exclusive representation agreement.

Ublog SA becomes the exclusive agent of Six Apart in Europe, Middle-East and Africa and has started distributing its leading weblogs publishing products, Typepad and Movable Type.

Typepad is already available in French and Spanish and will also be available in the next weeks in German and Dutch. Most European languages will follow shortly. Local Typepad and Movable Type websites will be launched very soon.

Asia, Europe and the USA gathered in California

Current Ublog platform users will be able to upgrade to Typepad accounts and seamlessly import their Ublog weblogs if they like. Ublog will maintain its popular free offering with more than 11 000 weblogs in France and make similar products available in Europe.

Part of the team @work

Our European team is very proud to join forces with Six Apart's visionary team that now has global representation in the USA, Asia and Europe.

Thank you Mena, Ben, Barak and of course Joi for your trust !

Changing comment servers in Radio UserLand. Radio UserLand tip: If you offer comments on your weblog, your pages will load slowly when UserLand's comment servers are experiencing high usage. One way to eliminate this bottleneck is to change comment servers to Pycs, an open-source clone of the Radio Community Server.

Pycs can be used as your comment and trackback server even if the rest of your weblog remains on the UserLand or Salon servers. Because Pycs.Net hosts dozens of weblogs instead of thousands, the response time is usually much quicker.
New editor for Manila and Radio UserLand. SocialDynamx is developing SmartManila, a Windows program for editing Radio UserLand and Manila sites:

Once setup, you can quickly switch between different services and not lose any data retrieved or the connection established to communicate with each unique server.

SmartManila brings the same benefits to Manila that FM Radio brought to Radio. Some of the highlights are: Drafts, Spell-checker, Seamless image support, Integrated multi-tabbed browser with undockable tabs, Increased writing-surface area

The program, available now as an early beta release, serves as a friendly non-browser interface to UserLand's weblog publishing tools (screen shot). It requires an existing Radio or Manila site in order to function, and Radio users must have the software running while SmartManila is being used.

A full review of the software will appear on Workbench after I've tried it out for a few days. One quick tip: To switch between your weblogs, click the small i button on the title bar, then choose Services.
In his essay Birth of the NewsMaster, Robin Good writes:

I have seen and heard of people subscribing to hundreds if not to thousands of feeds inside their RSS aggregators.
Is that manageable? Do these people get better and more information than everyone else?
It is not. They don't.
Information architecture is one of my abiding passions. Designing an information display that can be efficiently scanned is something I've thought a whole lot about. So I'm particularly keen to understand why some people report being overwhelmed by too much RSS input, while others say they're able to process lots of it effectively.

Yesterday, for example, Steve Gillmor told me that he's feeling overwhelmed by thousands of unread items in NetNewsWire. Yet I never feel that way. I suspect that's because I'm reading in batches of 100 (in the Radio UserLand feedreader). I scan each batch quickly. Although opinions differ as to whether or not a feed should be truncated, my stance (which I'm reversing today) has been that truncation is a useful way to achieve the effect you get when scanning the left column of the Wall Street Journal's front page. Of the 100 items, I'll typically only want to read several. I open them into new Mozilla tabs, then go back and read them. Everybody's different, but for me -- and given how newspapers work, I suspect for many others too -- it's useful to separate the acts of scanning and reading. When I'm done with the batch, I click once to delete all 100 items.

As a user of NetNewsWire Lite, I don't have access to the combined view that enables items to be processed in batch rather than individually. The example screenshot suggests that there is still a per-channel interaction required, however I suspect that when Combined View is used in conjunction with Show Aggregated New Items, you can see -- and process -- everything at once. (If I've got that wrong, I'm sure Brent will clarify.)

If Steve and I have the same batch-processing capability, why do we feel so differently about the overload problem? Maybe because it's not the same. If I'm right about NNW's Combined View / Show Aggregated New Items, the difference may boil down to this: my aggregated view delivers batches of 100, whereas Steve's delivers either small per-channel batches, or very large all-channel batches. So, in other words, I'm seeing what roughly corresponds to a Wall Street Journal news summary, whereas Steve is seeing what roughly corresponds to a 5x or 10x bigger version of that page. (If I've got that wrong, I'm sure Steve will clarify.)

Either way, the content is an awkward mixture of truncated and full items. Both modes are useful, but they serve different purposes and they mix badly. Truncation is necessary for the Wall Street Journal effect, though where and how to truncate is a tricky question that I've just now changed my mind about. And of course you need the full view at some point, so you can actually read stuff.

Currently I provide two versions of my feed: truncated and full. And the truncated feed is intelligently truncated. Using a callback that Dave Winer added to Radio UserLand a couple of years ago, I select the first HTML paragraph (<p>) element. Knowing that this will happen, I put some thought into what that element will contain when I'm writing an item. In effect, the first paragraph element is the lead, or blurb. Sometimes it's just a plain paragraph. But sometimes it will contain an image, or a quotation, when these are appropriate and useful hooks. This query, which shows the first paragraphs from all my January items, illustrates some of the variation. The fact that I can issue this query against my untruncated feed shows that my truncated feed is really not necessary. What is necessary, or at any rate useful, is the extra bit of preparation, i.e. thinking about what goes into that first HTML paragraph.

Unfortunately the effect of all my careful preparation has mostly been wasted so far. When you process large batches of feeds, some of which use intelligent truncation, some of which use dumb truncation (i.e., just grab the first 250 characters and slap on an ellipsis), and some of which use no truncation, the result is kind of a mess.

All along, I've had the idea that feedreaders should be able to smooth out these differences. If you wanted a Wall Street Journal view across all your feeds, you could get one. And if you wanted a full-content view across all your feeds, you could get that too.

Playing around with my queryable feed database today, I realized we're within shouting distance of making that happen. And I'm reversing my former stance on truncation. Here is a Wall Street Journal view of all of my feeds so far today. And here is a full-content view of all of my feeds so far today. It includes this long item I'm now writing, which shows how a mixture of truncated and untruncated content is optimal for neither scanning nor for reading.

Here are my conclusions:

Nobody needs to truncate feeds in order to enable front-page views (although some will still want to in order to drive traffic to websites).

Everybody's content should be HTML (if not XHTML).

Authors should think of the first HTML element (normally a paragraph, but could be a list or a blockquote or something else) as special: the lead, or deck, that will appear in a front-page view.

Feedreaders should XHTML-ize what they read.

Feedreaders should then offer a front-page view (e.g., just the first HTML element found in each item) as well as a full-content view.

By the way, in case it isn't obvious, the RSS/Atom controversy is irrelevant to this discussion. In both environments, the same principles could be applied in exactly the same ways, for exactly the same reasons.

Star: XML could become new lingua franca

By Mike Ricciuti
Staff Writer, CNET News.com
November 8, 2001, 4:00 a.m. PT

In a few short years, a once obscure technology bearing the unremarkable name of Extensible Markup Language has gone from a dry-as-dust specification to the center of the newest Web revolution.

Like the title character in Woody Allen's movie "Zelig," whenever industry luminaries--Microsoft's Bill Gates, Oracle's Larry Ellison, Sun Microsystems' Scott McNealy--take the stage to tout their companies' Web services strategies, XML is right there. Although it predates the Web services stampede, the technology seems almost custom-made for development of the trend.

<NEWSELEMENT type="image"> </NEWSELEMENT>But as with many new technologies, initial enthusiasm and unrelenting hype have combined to blur an understanding of what XML is and where the technology fits in Web services development--which itself is just emerging and still being defined. Some issues being debated are XML file size, the handling of mixed media such as voice and video, and the safeguarding of data in a document created with the language.

"The main problem is the very buzz about XML as the solution for all needs," said John E. Simpson, an XML specialist who has been a programmer for more than 20 years.

Classified as a "page description language," it is something closer to Hypertext Markup Language (HTML)--the current lingua franca of the Web--than to true programming languages such as Java or Visual Basic. Just as HTML helped fuel the first great wave of the Web's popularity, XML is poised to spur a new world of Web-based services that promise to make technology more usable.

<NEWSELEMENT type="table">

Gartner analyst Mary Knox says each industry is fighting its own XML standards battle, and financial services offers an example of how difficult the battle can be.

see commentary

</NEWSELEMENT>XML grew out of the publishing world as a way to describe the contents of documents exchanged over the Web. One of the language's key qualities is that it is readable by people, not just machines, making systems easy to debug.

The language provides terms used to define a Web document's tags--that is, the elements of the document that describe its various pieces--and the relationships between them. Developers at either end of a data exchange then agree to use a common set of tags. In this way, XML is uniquely flexible and versatile: It can be used to describe tennis balls or tires, employment contracts or engine parts.

That flexibility, however, can also present a problem. Because each XML transfer includes a large amount of information describing the data contained in it, file sizes can quickly mushroom.

Some companies have found XML files too big, especially when the transmission already carries large amounts of primary data. Humana, a regional health insurance company based in Louisville, Ky., uses XML to transmit some of its claims information to health care providers and other partners but relies on decades-old electronic data interchange systems for the bulk of its transfer needs.

<NEWSELEMENT type="image"> </NEWSELEMENT>Yet Brian LeClaire, a vice president of information technology at Humana, said XML is the best technology available for data transmissions, adding that it will improve as industry standards are adopted.

"XML is much more flexible," he said. "But it's not a well-standardized world yet, so when people talk about XML they are still trying to evolve standards around how data will be defined, and so on."

XML's creators at the World Wide Web Consortium don't see the language's propensity for weight gain as an obstacle. In fact, a document describing XML and posted to the W3C's Web site states that XML is "verbose, but that is not a problem. That was a conscious decision by the XML developers. The advantages of a text format are evident...and the disadvantages can usually be compensated."

Those advantages are apparently clear to Microsoft, which has in large part defined Web services through a high-pitched marketing campaign for its .Net strategy. XML is the technological linchpin of the .Net services plan.

"XML is the next revolution on the horizon," Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said at an industry conference earlier this year.

Sun, Oracle and IBM have also lauded XML and its central role in the Web services world, as have other major players. "XML has many really strong, positive characteristics, and that is why we have chosen it for more or less the foundation of everything we do," said Ray Ozzie, founder of Groove Networks and creator of Lotus Notes.

Going beyond Web pages
One of XML's key strengths is its application beyond Web pages. For example, the language can be used to exchange vital information for business transactions--such as shoe sizes, shipping crate numbers or the vintage of a case of wine--between different computing systems that would otherwise be unable to communicate.

In this way, XML is unparalleled for broadcasting data between servers and to Web pages as part of a Web services architecture. Many of the first uses of XML-based Web services are for unglamorous yet essential data-exchange applications.

<NEWSELEMENT type="image"> </NEWSELEMENT>In HTML, a markup language that defines elements of Web pages, a vocabulary used by all developers has been defined by standards organizations. The HTML terms used to describe a Web page based on a server in Prague are the same as those used in Detroit.

XML, by contrast, describes the language used to define documents. That is, it's used when no preset vocabulary exists.

"In XML, you are defining the data, the names you call the data, and the relationship of all data to one another," Humana's LeClaire said.

While Web services pioneers find ways to adapt XML, the W3C is tackling new parts of the language that could play a key role in advancing the trend, such as technologies involving multimedia and security. Last month, the organization posted a draft specification for VoiceXML 2.0, which is designed to bring synthesized speech, spoken and touch-tone commands, digitized audio, and computer-human conversations to the Web.

The W3C also is soliciting comment from programmers on how best to encrypt data transmitted using XML. A draft of a specification has been posted, and final debate is slated for this month.

As with all other evolving technologies, the progress of Web services will mean that other areas will be more fully defined either through standards or through accepted workarounds.

Dan Bricklin is confident that it will be only a matter of time before Web services take off. As the co-inventor of the first PC spreadsheet, VisiCalc, and one of those who helped start the personal computer revolution two decades ago, he has seen other major technologies go through similar growing pains.

"A lot of what we are building today we are building for the first time," Bricklin said. "And we don't fully understand it."

Kicking Radio
Periodically I get email from new Salon bloggers who've downloaded Radio Userland and tried to post to their new blog, only to find themselves thoroughly confused by Radio's innovative but initially hard-to-fathom "desktop webserver" approach.

Recently, rather than try to fumblingly explain what's really going on myself, I've just been pointing people to this chapter of Rogers Cadenhead's book "Radio UserLand Kick Start," which explains how to start a Radio blog.

There's more about the whole book here. By putting that chapter online Rogers has performed a great public service (since the documentation from UserLand is not as extensive as it could be). Thanks!

In an amusing side note, Cadenhead, who also has long maintained the "alterna-Drudge" site Drudge Retort at the "drudge.com" domain name, reports that his server was brought to its knees Monday by crazed Web surfers desperately turning to Drudge for their fix of Janet Jackson's breast-flesh.

A new demonstration of blogs power

Mario Sixtus blogged Joi, Ethan, Jay and me in Frankfurter Rundschau and future launch in Germany

Thank you Mario, for blogging me in Frankfurter Runfschau, for non German speakers like me, here is the Google translation.

I am actually considering a German launch of Ublog very soon, I already have some friends and valuable contacts, but if you would like to help me, please let me know. We would be looking for a full time business development person very soon as well as help for the translation and localization of the site immediately.

Thank you for your help ! If you are interested, please drop me a line here.

22h35 # reply 8

jeudi 29 Janvier 2004

I blogged for the Guardian today - new blog powered media appearing

I am not a journalist, for sure. I am a blogger and I blogged today for The Guardian, on

"Minding your own business
French entrepreneur Loïc Le Meur offers seven golden rules - for doing nothing"

Few weeks ago, Neil McInstosh who is Online Deputy editor of The Guardian, London, read some of my notes about creating a company and what bloggers say about it.

Neil sent me an email asking me if I would agree to write an article for him about the value of the idea in the process of starting a business, for a fee. What was very strange for me is on the one hand the fact that he found me on my blog and on the other hand it was the first time I would get my ideas published directly in a newspaper without going through the mind of a journalist.

It is very interesting how I see two type of journalists or editors emerging. The ones who get the blogging and the others.

Here is what Neil says about blogging and journalism:

"We're finding that blogs are a very useful source for us to find new and interesting people to write for us. Late last year, we even got a reader of our own weblog to write a comment piece for us, after he left some very interesting comments on one of our entries. It's all part of the wider discussion that weblogs are provoking, both about the news and the nature of news."

I also met Tony Perkins , of Always-On in Davos. I will soon blog about Tony and Always-On in more details but clearly he is inventing a new form of media based on bloggers, with the people behind Weblogs-Inc (I would love to meet them too by the way) and more recently TJ who just launched in Germany Creative Weblogging. It seems TJ is also trying to launch a new type of media, blogs powered, here is what he says about it.

Interesting. There is only one thing that I am sure about, the traditional media companies that do not get it will lose some of their audience to the ones who get it, like The Guardian.

What do you think about that ?

Ingenting er som før (internett).

Ophelia

Og litt her.
