March Madness
You may think that if the editorial board of a large metropolitan newspaper takes the time to write an editorial on the NCAA Basketball Tournament, they surely know the rudimentary facts, such as when the tournament starts.
You may think that, but if you do, you're wrong.
A minor mistake? The problem is that it undermines the authority that outside critics (such as newspaper editors and academics) presume to have over sports -- an authority that the editorial attempts to apply. A sports fan, coach or athlete sees a mistake like that in the first line, and dismisses the opinion as uninformed.
Fortunately, we're just talking about sports here. Mistakes like this rarely, if ever, occur in editorials on more important matters.
