The Addiction Treatment Business
You'd think that among the staunchest opponents of legalizing slots in Maryland would be those responsible for treating gambling addicts.
Think again.
It turns out that Maryland's gambling addiction counselors stand to receive a huge windfall from potential taxes on slot revenues. And with the legalization of slots, there's bound to be more addicts. And mo' addicts = mo' demand for services = mo' money. Q.E.D.
Governor Erlich's compassionate conservatism at work.
To be fair, not every couselor is keeping quiet in the hope for greater funding:
"We do not legalize cocaine in order to have drug treatment programs, but that's exactly what we're saying here - that we have to legalize gambling to treat gambling addicts," said Valerie Lorenz, director of the Compulsive Gambling Center Inc. of Baltimore.
