You know things are getting bad in Iraq when ...

The New York Times put this photo on its cover page today.

I was wondering whether they would ever dare to use such images.

[By they way, aren't they properly called "transfer tubes" nowadays?]

Bush Screws Donors

The nerve of the White House truly knows no bounds.

It was a mouthwatering menu. Not that you'd expect less for $2,000 a plate.

Seered beef tenderloins with golden tomatoes on an herb-encrusted baguette. Grilled garlic chicken with smoked gouda on a honey wheat wrap. Fruits and gourmet olives and crudite. A gourmet luncheon with only one thing missing: something to eat it with.

The explanation was at the bottom of the menus distributed at President Bush's $1.5 million Charlotte fund-raiser Monday.

"At the request of the White House, silverware will not accompany the table settings," it said in discreetly fine print.

No silver. No plastic.

The lack of utensils might have been why many plates went virtually untouched.

The reason: So the tinkle of silver wouldn't disrupt the president's speech.

[From the Charlotte Observer, via Atrios]

Can you imagine paying for a $2,000 dinner, only to find you couldn't eat it, because the President doesn't like to hear the clinking and clanging of silverware while he speaks?

"Cooperation Without Compromise"

A picture named nae_logo.gif

That's the official slogan of the National Association of Evangelicals, enthusiastically embraced by its President, Ted Haggard:

We Evangelicals have utilized the NAE to strengthen our identity as born-again believers, to provide a common voice to government, the press, and other faith groups, and to mobilize resources toward the proclamation of The Gospel.

"Cooperation without compromise" is the theme we embrace as we work to advance the cause of Christ in the midst of the rich diversity that is evangelicalism. Now with 30 million members, and with the responsibility of speaking for over 40 million evangelicals in America, the NAE finds itself in an increasingly influential role.

The goal of the NAE is to represent, mobilize and network evangelicals in America. Moreover, as evangelicalism has increased in influence throughout the world, NAE's responsibility to represent born-again Christians continues to grow. NAE members understand that there are many things we can do individually, but a few important things we can only do together.Together, we can accomplish what we could never do alone.

Isn't that the slogan for the whole Right Wing?

"Sure, we'll cooperate, so long as we get our way."
