Global War on Terror, the continuing saga ...

In his speech today to graduates of the U.S. Military Academy, Donald Rumsfeld said,

Yet despite our successes, we are closer to the beginning of this struggle with global insurgency than to its end.

So we haven't even reached the halfway point in the Global War on Terror. It makes one wonder to which "global insurgency" he is referring -- the terrorists' or the neoconservatives'? He could have just as easily said, "We are closer to the beginning of our global insurgency than to its end."

Recalling my previous post on the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, perhaps the list of countries is prospective. Although many of them include U.S. bases or troops involved in Operation Enduring Freedom or Operation Iraqi Freedom, it's hard to believe that all may be accounted for in this way (e.g. Iran).

Targeted Pandering

From today's Washington Post, an article by Brian Faler on online advertising:

The appeals can also be directed at users who fit certain demographic and geographic profiles. The Washington Post's site, washingtonpost.com, which Kerry also has advertised on, requires readers to provide their Zip code, gender, income level and other personal information. That data is used to target advertising to individual users -- so much so that two readers viewing the same page from different computers may see different ads.

Perhaps I could fill in my personal information, and they could tell me who and what to vote for in all the minor races no one knows anything about.

Lincoln, Churchill, and Bush

The Honorable Anthony Principi, Secretary of Veterans Affairs, recently hosted a chat on the Bush Cheney 2004 web site.

A picture named Bushgoggles.jpg Here are some highlights:

  • I believe that President Bush brings to the office of the Presidency brings [sic] two qualities that make him stand out from his predecessors. An ethic of principle and an ethic of compassion. In my mind, those two qualities are rare in one President and why President Bush commands the same stature as men like Lincoln and Churchill. I believe the President's service in the guard has played into his ability to be a great leader.

  • I think our active military respond better to Republicans because of the ideals we believe in and because of the tremendous support that President Bush and previous Republican presidents provide for our military and our veterans.
  • [U]nder President Bush's leadership we are safer and more secure than ever before in our history.

Well, there you have it.

Or do you?

Does the military support the President's leadership? Not the Army Times.

Has the President made our country safer than it has ever been in its history? Quite the opposite, in fact.

Is he a great benefactor to our troops and veterans? Hardly.
