More on Medals

[1] Molly Ivins reminds us that Pat Tillman was awarded a Silver Star shortly after his death for heroic action against the enemy.

Jessica Lynch, anyone?

[2] Relenting to pressure from the military, President Bush agreed to create separate medals for Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

As mentioned previously (here and here), the President had created one set of "Global War on Terrorism" Medals for both operations. Rumsfeld denied there was any political motivation for this.

[3] I asked previously (here) whether the long list of duty locations (here) for the Global War on Terrorism medals -- a list that includes Iran and Syria -- was prospective rather than retrospective.

My hypothesis receives some support from a comment on the DoD's website. In response to a question about the medals, the commenter states: "Future authorization for these medals will be considered and approved by the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff if the war on terrorism expands."

Let's roll!

[To find the comment, search the FAQ section of the DoD site for "Global War on Terrorism Medals."]
