Michael Moore to monitor Florida election

As you may know, Florida still seems to be having problems securing public trust in their electoral system. Hell, not even Gov. Bush's own party believes in the voting machines anymore:

Republican Gov. Jeb Bush has tried for months to persuade Florida voters touchscreen voting machines are reliable. His own party apparently hasn't gotten the message.

The state GOP paid for a flier critical of the new technology and sent it to some south Florida voters where a primary election is scheduled next month.

"The new electronic voting machines do not have a paper ballot to verify your vote in case of a recount," the message states. "Make sure your vote counts. Order your absentee ballot today."

[snip]

Earlier this week, state election officials reported that a computer crash erased detailed records from Miami-Dade County's first widespread use of the touchscreen machines in the 2002 gubernatorial primaries and other elections.

Thus I was pleased to read a short blurb in the Baltimore Sun yesterday that Michael Moore will be highlighting the issue in the coming months (answering the call of Fidel Castro for election monitoring in Florida?):

Michael Moore, the director of Fahrenheit 9/11, said he would make stops throughout Florida in October to focus attention on voting rights issues and try to prevent a repeat of the 2000 debacle. "We will guarantee to every Floridian that their vote will be counted this year," Moore said. "I will ahve my cameras. We will put a huge spotlight on them. They will not get away with it this time."

The mainstream media was unwilling to investigate the disenfranchisement of black voters in Election 2000. Without Moore drawing attention to the issue, Jeb Bush could get away with it again.

Postscript: The lost voting records for the 2002 gubernatorial primary have been found. But that doesn't necessarily reassure critics:

But Rodriguez-Taseff and other critics of the machines fear the newly found data has been tampered. They want a third party to verify the authenticity of the data.

Again, I'm sure Cuba would be happy to send neutral representatives to monitor our election.
