Robinson for Congress

A picture named vrob.jpg He's been called the "Black Jesse Helms" and the "Black Rush Limbaugh."

He's trying to become the first black Republican Congressman elected in a former confederate state since Reconstruction.

He's Vernon Robinson, and he's running for Congress in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

His agenda: pro-guns, pro-God-in-government-and-schools, pro-Bill Cosby, anti-gays, anti-illegal aliens, anti-abortion, anti-women-in-the-military and anti-IRS.

In his latest ad (See "The Twilight Zone vs. Leave it to Beaver"), he compares America the way it is now -- a "Twilight Zone" of terrorists, gays, minority quotas, activist judges, and illegal aliens -- with America as he hopes it will be -- a "Leave it to Beaver" suburb.

Unfortunately, he never asked permission from the intellectual property holders of "Leave It to Beaver" to use the material in his advertisement. That's why someone I know very well -- she happens to be a lawyer -- had to send a "cease and desist" letter to Mr. Robinson's office.

Hmmm.... stealing property? That's not a very conservative value, is it?

If only he had listened to Bill Cosby.

McCain to the Rescue

As the cable news channels start to pick up the long-discredited accusations of the "Swift Boat Veterans for Truth" -- thanks to Drudge's tireless promotion -- McCain comes to Kerry's aid:

McCain, a former prisoner of war in Vietnam, called an ad criticizing John Kerry's military service "dishonest and dishonorable" and urged the White House on Thursday to condemn it as well.

"It was the same kind of deal that was pulled on me," McCain said in an interview with the Associated Press, referring to his bitter Republican primary fight with President Bush.

Imagine WWII veterans closely tied to and funded by prominent Democrats and people close to Bill Cinton forming a group in 1996 to question Bob Dole's military service, all but one of whom never knew or fought with Dole.

It's bad enough in itself that the right wing attack machine has slandered the service of McCain and Kerry. But to put it in the context of an electoral contest against George W. Bush, who avoided Vietnam altogether thanks to his family connections and likely went AWOL during his time in Alabama -- it is outrageous.

Postscript: You can find a good rundown of the controversy at DKos and Disinfopedia.
