Catastrophic success
President Bush is finally willing to admit regret and take responsibility for a perceived mistake:
Had we had to do it over again, we would look at the consequences of catastrophic success, being so successful so fast that an enemy that should have surrendered or been done in escaped and lived to fight another day.
Yes, he regrets that the invasion was too successful too quickly -- if only the invasion had gone more slowly, as expected ... then the enemy wouldn't have escaped (?).
John Edwards responded:
The president is now describing his Iraq policy as a catastrophic success. I, like most Americans, have no idea what that means, but it is long past time for this president to accept personal responsibility for his failures and for his performance.
Postscript: President Bush also admitted (perhaps without realizing it) how narrowly political his outlook is. When asked whether the war on terrorism would take decades, he answered, "I'm a two-month man right now."
"I'm a two-month man"? That sounds like the beginnings of a great blues song.
