Fundies Plan October Assault on D.C.
I mentioned previously the America for Jesus rally that will take place on the National Mall this October 22nd.
Well, it turns out this is not the only pious rally scheduled for October at the National Mall, just in time for the November election.
The Mayday for Marriage rally in support of the "sanctity of marriage" will take place on October 15th. (Check out the promotional video here.) They're hoping for a million faithful march, but planning for around 100,000, according to October's edition of the Atlantic Monthly.
In reviewing promotions for the rally, I'm disturbed by how vehement and violent some of the supporting rhetoric is. Take, for example, the following passages from the Sound the Alarm web-site, linked by the official Mayday for Marriage site:
[1] America is in the throws of a cultural war in which Satan is doing two things:
- Destroying the people of our nation with every moral filth known to humanity.
- Deceiving the Church until it has fallen asleep and lacks the strength to rouse itself for the fight.
Do you know where the phrase, "Don't impose your morality on others!" originated? It was written to Abraham Lincoln in opposition to his fight against slavery. Every major spiritual revival has had a component that challenged the morality of the day. It is our responsibility to take a stand when it comes to matters about which the Bible takes a stand. ...
Are you willing to answer that call? Are you willing to return to being a people of God's presence? Are you willing to put yourself, your reputation and your faith on the line -- and engage in the battle for the souls of America through a massive spiritual awakening in our land?
Yes, for them opposition to same-sex marriage is analogous to opposition to slavery, and the notion of tolerating others with a different viewpoint originated not as a solution to Europe's centuries of religious wars but as a mistaken response to Lincoln's drive for emancipation.
[2] Now, here we are, looking down the barrel at the same-sex marriage issue. It has already become legal in the state of Massachusetts. If we don't stand at this time, this will be one more piece of ground that the enemy takes while the Church does little or nothing. Only this time, this issue threatens the very pulpits of our land, by potentially calling any adverse reference to homosexuality a crime. The Church is beginning to feel the threat of the doom that surely lies ahead.
Certainly there are efforts to organize. The word is going out. A stirring has begun and yet [sigma] if we are not careful, we will miss the real issue.
We must not set our guns a-blazing at the evil around us until we recognize the apostasy that lies within us. Our own hearts must be broken. We have no authority to address the evil of our day unless we repent and call upon the Lord for the Church. Let those who minister before the Lord weep. Let them cry out to the Lord for His Church. The Church is the problem; the Church holds the answer. Doing nothing is not an option. ...
It seems that God, in His mercy, is using the battle against same-sex marriage to call the Church to the role she was designed for: to be a mighty beacon of light. May we stand up and take back the ground the enemy has taken, as we hasten the coming of the Lord.
Judging from this last passage, it seems the ban on assault weapons expired just in the nick of time.
